Juma lives in the Mathare slum of Nairobi and draws from his life experience to create his art. Juma channels the pain and stress of his life into his painting; he has drawn from experiencing police brutality and the fragility of life in a slum. Through
his art, Juma hopes people experience the reality of life in the slum, the harsh reality that the people who live in the slums experience everyday of their life. He also paints scenes, landscapes and lively animals which are full of imagination and this shows what is deep in the psyche
Juma’s talent for artistic expression was a gift he was unaware of for most of his life until coming to paint at Alfajiri. His prodigious raw gift is inspiring to all. He now believes that everyone has a gift they can share with the world, regardless of their life circumstances. He encourages the youth he works with to not be afraid of trying because we can never know what hidden gifts we may have.
